Minnesota accepted the 94,631-acre grant on January 27, 1863 — within six weeks of the Mankato mass execution (December 26, 1862). The land granted was predominantly ceded by the Dakota under the 1851 Treaties of Traverse des Sioux and Mendota. The federal government had just expelled the Dakota (February–March 1863) and simultaneously used their ceded land base to capitalize the University of Minnesota.
