## What "systems theory" actually claims
Systems theory is not a theory *of* anything in particular, and that is the whole difficulty and the whole point. Its claim is second-order: that certain structural facts recur across domains whose contents have nothing in common, and that those facts can be studied on their own terms. Ludwig von Bertalanffy put the wager plainly in [An Outline of General System Theory](https://academic.oup.com/bjps/article-abstract/I/2/134/1514614) (1950) -- principles like wholeness, openness and equifinality hold for an organism, an economy and a machine alike, so a general science of them should be possible.
The field has been rediscovered from several directions at once, which is why its bibliography looks like an accident. Wiener arrived from wartime fire-control and named the study of control and communication *cybernetics*; Ashby supplied its hardest result, the law of requisite variety, which fixes a ceiling on regulation -- only variety can absorb variety, so no controller can compensate for more disturbance than it has states to answer with. Bogdanov had built much of the same edifice two decades earlier in Russian, under the name *Tektology*, and was largely unread in the West. Simon came from administration and decision-making and left [The Architecture of Complexity](https://faculty.sites.iastate.edu/tesfatsi/archive/tesfatsi/ArchitectureOfComplexity.HSimon1962.pdf) (1962), still the sharpest single argument in the literature. Prigogine came from thermodynamics and showed that order can be *bought* with a throughput of energy rather than paid for once.
What holds this together is a refusal of substrate. A thermostat, a cell, a firm and a climate are treated here as the same kind of object, and the discipline stands or falls on whether that abstraction earns its keep. The seven microsims below are the honest test of that: each one is a mechanism, not an illustration, and each keeps on screen the number that would falsify it.
## Seven machines, in the order they build
**Attractor** starts with the objects themselves. Release a cloud of wildly different initial conditions and they collapse onto the same set -- and there are only four kinds of set they can collapse onto: a point, a cycle, a torus, or something of fractional dimension. That taxonomy is the long-run identity of any dissipative system.
**Bifurcation_theory** asks how those objects are born and destroyed. Move one parameter smoothly and behaviour changes in jumps: one state, two, four, then chaos. The spacing of those jumps converges on Feigenbaum's constant 4.669, the same value for every smooth unimodal map -- a quantitative universal in a field often accused of having none.
**Catastrophe_theory** takes the discontinuity seriously. The cusp equilibrium surface is literally folded, and where the fold runs out the state must jump. Sweep the control back and it jumps somewhere else: hysteresis, drawn as geometry. This is Rene Thom's contribution and the sim is its manifold, turned by hand.
**Synchronization** is the first genuinely collective effect. Kuramoto's oscillators have different natural frequencies and no conductor, yet above a critical coupling Kc = 2*gamma they lock. The order parameter r rises from nothing, which is what a phase transition looks like when the thing ordering is *timing* rather than matter.
**Scale-free_network** turns to structure and shows that hubs need no designer. Growth plus preferential attachment -- new nodes attaching in proportion to existing degree -- yields a power law on its own. Switch attachment to uniform random and the hubs vanish, which is the controlled experiment that proves which ingredient matters.
**Hierarchy** is Simon's near-decomposability made measurable. Nest modules so internal couplings dominate external ones and a separation of time scales appears: each module equilibrates internally almost at once while the whole system takes far longer to settle. Flatten the ratio and the levels dissolve into one undifferentiated blob. Simon's argument was that only near-decomposable systems can be evolved, tested or repaired in parts -- which is to say, only they can get large.
**Dissipative_system** closes the arc on the thermodynamic bill. Below a critical Rayleigh number the fluid layer is dead; above it, convection rolls organise themselves out of nothing. The structure is not stored, it is continuously paid for, and it disappears the moment the flow stops. Prigogine's point, and the reason self-organisation is not a violation of anything.
## How to read 491 children
The tree below is alphabetical because it is machine-harvested, not curated -- which makes it exhaustive and unreadable in equal measure. Four bands account for most of it, and knowing which one an entry belongs to is most of the work of reading it.
There are the **founders and their programmes** -- Bogdanov, von Bertalanffy, Wiener, Ashby, Bateson, Maturana and Varela, Forrester, Meadows, Holland -- where the argument is usually about whether organisation is a fact in the world or an artefact of the observer, and where a surprising number of the authors changed sides. There are the **mechanisms**: feedback, emergence, self-organisation, attractors, bifurcation, criticality, autopoiesis; these are the entries the sims above operate on, and they are the ones that transfer between domains unchanged. There are the **applications**, which is where the bulk of the count sits -- systems biology, ecology, sociology, archaeology, political science, family therapy, urban metabolism -- each an argument that some field's subject matter is better read as a coupled whole than as a list of parts. And there are the **methods**: system dynamics, agent-based modelling, network analysis, Monte Carlo, operations research, soft systems methodology, the tools that turn the claim into a calculation.
A caution worth carrying into the list. Systems theory's reach is also its standing criticism: a vocabulary general enough to describe a cell and a corporation can describe both *shallowly*, and the field's weaker literature substitutes the vocabulary for the analysis. The corrective is exactly what this room is built around -- a mechanism you can run, with a number on it that can come out wrong.
