## What it is
An analog signal is a continuous signal whose value varies smoothly and can take on any value within a range, representing information by a physical quantity (such as voltage or current) that is analogous to the original phenomenon.
## How it works / why it matters
Unlike a digital signal, which is quantized into discrete levels, an analog signal is defined for every instant of time and every amplitude in its range, so it can in principle carry infinite resolution. This continuity is also its weakness: analog signals accumulate noise and distortion that cannot be perfectly removed, which motivates conversion to digital form via sampling and quantization for storage, processing, and transmission.
## Signs & universals
Instantiates: signal · measurement · noise — a continuous measured signal susceptible to accumulated noise.
## Related
It is a Continuous-time signal and, more broadly, a Continuous signal described by a Waveform such as a [[Sine_wave]]. It is the input to Analog signal processing and, once sampled, to [[Digital_signal_processing]]; it is transported by standards like the 4-20 mA current loop and is central to Signal Processing.

## From the Real GENERATIVE library
> An analog signal (American English) or analogue signal (British and Commonwealth English) is any continuous-time signal representing some other quantity, i.e., analogous to another quantity. For example, in an analog audio signal, the instantaneous signal voltage varies continuously with the pressure of the sound waves.[1] ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_signal))
