## Story
Barium was discovered in 1808 by English chemist Humphry Davy through electrolysis of molten barium oxide. The name derives from Greek barys, meaning heavy, referring to the high density of barium minerals. Barium is relatively abundant (425 mg/kg) and occurs primarily as barite (barium sulfate, BaSOโ) and witherite (barium carbonate, BaCOโ).
Barium is a soft, silvery-white metal that reacts readily with oxygen and water. Soluble barium compounds are toxic and can cause muscular paralysis; however, insoluble barium sulfate is administered orally as a contrast agent in medical X-ray imaging because it is radiopaque and non-absorbable in the gastrointestinal tract. [model-prior - verify] Barium compounds are used in paints, coatings, and pigments. Barium ferrite magnets have applications in permanent magnets. [model-prior - verify] Barium fluoride windows are transparent to infrared radiation and used in optical instruments.
The corpus meets barium as a heavy metal with contrasting properties: toxic in soluble form, yet essential as a diagnostic imaging tool (barium meals) and a platform for industrial chemistry.
