## Story
Dysprosium was discovered in 1886 by French chemist Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran as yet another lanthanide from the rare-earth ores of Sweden and elsewhere [model-prior - verify]. Its name derives from the Greek dysprositos, meaning 'hard to get,' a fitting epithet for a rare earth whose chemical properties made it extraordinarily difficult to separate from its lanthanide neighbors. It is one of the four rare earths that came from the Ytterby quarry near Stockholm.
The element is a silvery metal with strong paramagnetic and ferromagnetic properties. Dysprosium's neutron-absorption cross-section is exceptionally large, making it critical in nuclear reactor control rods alongside gadolinium and terbium [model-prior - verify]. In permanent magnets, dysprosium is added to neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) formulations to boost coercivity and high-temperature performance, essential for electric motors in hybrid and electric vehicles [model-prior - verify]. Dysprosium is also used in high-intensity discharge lamps and solid-state lasers.
Like its Ytterby cousins, dysprosium embodies the canon's interest in elemental scarcity, geologic clustering, and the deep entanglement of rare earths with modern power systems—from nuclear fission to electric transportation.
