That demand is weighed against **biocapacity** — the productive area actually available to regenerate those resources. When footprint exceeds biocapacity the world runs an ecological deficit, or *overshoot*, drawing down natural capital faster than ecosystems rebuild it. This microsim lets you choose a consumption lifestyle and dial a carbon multiplier, then watch how many Earths that demand would need and when in the year humanity's budget runs dry. ## About this microsim The sim exposes three real controls. **Lifestyle / Consumption Archetype** is an integer selector (0–4, opening on *World Ave*) that swaps between five consumption profiles and sets the baseline per-person footprint. The **Carbon Footprint Multiplier** (default 1.00×, range 0.3–2.5) scales the energy-land component up or down. The **▶ Play Year / Overshoot Sweep** button animates the calendar, sweeping through the twelve months to reveal the date on which cumulative demand overtakes a single year of biocapacity. at the University of British Columbia in the early 1990s, the ecological footprint is an accounting framework that converts human resource use into a single comparable area. Both demand (footprint) and supply (biocapacity) are expressed in **global hectares (gha)** — hectares standardised to world-average biological productivity. Globally, humanity's footprint now runs at roughly 1.7 Earths: we use renewable resources about 1.7 times faster than the biosphere can regenerate them. Because the metric is spatial, it makes an abstract sustainability question concrete — how much *area* of living planet does a lifestyle require? ## How the accounting works Total footprint is the sum of six land-use components, each converted to global hectares: | Component | What it accounts for | |---|---| | Cropland | Area to grow food, fibre and feed crops | | Grazing land | Pasture for meat, dairy and wool | | Fishing grounds | Marine and inland area for the annual catch | | Forest products | Land supplying timber, pulp and fuelwood | | Built-up land | Ground under housing, roads and infrastructure | | Carbon | Forest area needed to absorb fossil-fuel CO₂ | The **carbon** component is the largest, near 60% of the global total — which is why the sim gives it its own multiplier. Two ratios drive the display.
