# Electron shell An electron shell is a set of [[Atomic_orbital|orbitals]] at similar energy around a nucleus. Electrons fill them in order, and an atom's entire chemical personality is decided by what happens in the outermost one — how many electrons it holds, and how far it is from full. ## Full shells refuse This is where the spine's central distinction is made. [[Helium]] has two electrons in a closed first shell and therefore nothing to gain by reacting, which is what makes it a [[Noble_gas]] and what makes it the boundary marker of the reaction canon. [[Hydrogen]] has one electron in an unfilled shell and will do almost anything to resolve that, which is why it burns, bonds, and forms the [[Hydrogen_bond]] that gives [[Properties_of_water|water]] its anomalies. [[Oxygen]], two short of full, is the reciprocal case and the reason [[Redox]] chemistry looks the way it does.
