## Story
Flerovium was first synthesized in 1999 at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia, through the bombardment of plutonium-244 with calcium-48 ions. The element is named for Georgy Flyorov (also transliterated as Flerov), the Soviet physicist who co-founded the Flerov Laboratory and pioneered the Soviet superheavy element synthesis program. Fl-289 has a half-life of approximately 2.65 hours [model-prior - verify], one of the longer-lived superheavy elements.
Flerovium occupies group 14 (the carbon group), though relativistic effects are expected to make it behave unlike lead or tin [model-prior - verify]. Some theoretical models predict it might show noble-gas-like properties due to relativistic orbital effects [model-prior - verify]. Flerovium is often cited as part of the island of stability's outer edge—nuclei that survive longer than their neighbors due to shell-closure effects in nuclear physics.
The naming returns the honor to the Soviet tradition in superheavy element chemistry. Flyorov and the Flerov Laboratory were architects of the synthesis frontier; naming this element for him completes the recognition of the international efforts that made elements Z 100-118 possible. Flerovium stands at the threshold of the island of stability, the frontier realm where nuclear magic numbers and relativistic effects create an oasis of half-lives measurable in hours.
