> Functional analysis is a branch of mathematical analysis, the core of which is formed by the study of vector spaces endowed with some kind of limit-related structure (for example, inner product, norm, or topology) and the linear functions defined on these spaces and suitably respecting these structures. The historical roots of functional analysis lie in the ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functional_analysis))

## What it is
Functional analysis is the branch of mathematics that studies infinite-dimensional vector spaces equipped with a notion of distance or size (norms and inner products) together with the linear operators acting on them, such as Banach and Hilbert spaces.
## How it works / why it matters
It supplies the rigorous foundation for signal processing by treating signals as elements of function spaces (e.g. square-integrable functions) and treating filters, Fourier transforms and other operations as bounded linear operators between those spaces. Concepts such as orthogonality, completeness, and operator norms underpin sampling theory, convergence of transform expansions, and the stability of linear systems.
