## Story
Gadolinium was discovered in 1880 by Jean-Charles Galissard de Marignac, who extracted it from gadolinite ore, itself named after the chemist Johan Gadolin [model-prior - verify]. It is the eighth element of the lanthanide series and the first member to complete the filling of the 4f electron shell, giving it unique magnetic and electronic properties. Like other rare earths, gadolinium's full-scale industrial supply remained scarce until the 20th century.
The element exhibits exceptional magnetic properties and holds the highest magnetic moment of any element at room temperature [model-prior - verify]. Gadolinium's thermal neutron absorption cross-section is enormous, making it invaluable in nuclear reactor control rods. In medicine, gadolinium-based contrast agents (particularly gadolinium chelate complexes) are widely used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enhance soft-tissue visibility and detect tumors, lesions, and blood-flow abnormalities [model-prior - verify].
Gadolinium's dual role—as both a nuclear-control and medical-imaging material—reflects the corpus's interest in technologies that harness elemental physics for human safety and health. Its neutron-absorption role ties it indirectly to space-mining and reactor design; its medical applications speak to the instrumental reach of rare earths into clinical practice.
