## Story
Germanium was discovered in 1886 by German chemist Clemens Winkler in the mineral argyrodite (silver-germanium sulfide) from the Himmelsfurst silver mine in Saxony. Winkler named it "germanium" after his native country, Germany. The discovery was significant because Mendeleev had predicted the existence and properties of an element he called "eka-silicon" fourteen years earlier; germanium matched his predictions so closely that the periodic table's predictive power was dramatically confirmed. Despite this auspicious beginning, germanium remained rare and expensive, with limited practical applications for many decades [model-prior - verify].
Germanium is a brittle, grayish-white metalloid (a substance with properties between metal and nonmetal) with semiconductor properties that make it valuable for electronics [model-prior - verify]. It does not occur in pure form in nature; its primary ores are argyrodite and germanite (germanium sulfide minerals), though it is also obtained as a by-product of copper and zinc smelting [model-prior - verify]. Germanium was the first material used to create the transistor (invented in 1947), revolutionizing electronics before being largely supplanted by silicon due to silicon's superior thermal stability [model-prior - verify]. Today, germanium is still used in specialized optoelectronics, infrared detectors, and photovoltaic applications [model-prior - verify].
In the corpus, germanium represents the bridge between the classical periodic table's predictive triumph and the modern semiconductor revolution. Like gallium, it was predicted before discovery, affirming Mendeleev's framework. Its role in the transistorโthe foundation of all modern computingโmakes it essential to the information and computational layers of the Technate.
