# Helicity (fluid mechanics) Helicity is the integral of Velocity dotted with Vorticity over a flow — a measure of how much the motion corkscrews. Unlike Energy or Enstrophy, which are positive by construction, helicity is signed: it distinguishes right-handed from left-handed swirl, and it vanishes in any flow with mirror symmetry. Its importance is topological. In an ideal fluid helicity is conserved, and what it is conserving is the knottedness and linkage of the vortex lines themselves — a fact that connects Fluid_dynamics to Topology more directly than any other quantity in the subject. ## A conserved knot count Because Helmholtz's_theorems freeze vortex lines into the material, two linked vortex rings can be stretched and dragged around the domain but cannot be unlinked without cutting, and helicity counts exactly that linkage. Moffatt's 1969 result made the correspondence precise: for a field of thin vortex tubes, helicity equals the sum over all pairs of the product of their circulations times their linking number, plus self-linking terms for tubes that are twisted or knotted internally. The consequence is that a topological property of the flow — something you would ordinarily compute with genus and linking arguments rather than with calculus — has a dynamical invariant attached to it. That is unusual enough in physics to be worth stating plainly. ## Why it resists dissipation Helicity's near-conservation has practical consequences. A maximally helical flow, one in which vorticity is everywhere parallel to velocity, has no Vortex_stretching acting on it: the nonlinear term in the Vorticity_equation switches off. Such flows are therefore unusually long-lived and unusually resistant to the turbulent cascade — the mechanism by which a tornado, a helical wake, or a tightly wound Vortex survives far longer than the ambient conditions would suggest. In Turbulence more generally, helicity is a second cascaded invariant alongside energy, and its presence measurably slows the rate at which energy reaches small scales. ## Where handedness matters The atmosphere is the classic arena. Storm-relative helicity is a routine forecasting parameter: a strongly veering wind profile supplies the horizontal vorticity a thunderstorm updraft can tilt and stretch into rotation, and above a threshold value forecasters expect supercells. That is Weather_forecasting running directly on a vorticity integral, and it matters to the northern and southern agricultural bridges of this spine in the literal sense that it forecasts what lands on the field. Helicity is equally central in plasma physics, where the magnetic analogue constrains how a fusion confinement field can relax, and in superfluid turbulence, where the tangle's topology is quantised. ## Designing with handedness Engineers exploit helicity when they want mixing without loss, or persistence without stall. Helical inserts in a heat-exchanger tube raise Heat_transfer by generating streamwise swirl; helical strakes wound around a chimney or a riser suppress Vortex_shedding by refusing the flow a coherent spanwise line to shed from. Rifling in a barrel and the twist in a rotor wake are the same idea. Each of these is a deliberate choice of handedness imposed on a flow that would otherwise be symmetric, and each shows up on some bridge of the WT!Thury_Hydrodynamics_Compendium — manufacturing, energy, transportation. **On the spine:** Vorticity · Helmholtz's_theorems · Enstrophy · Topology · Turbulence · WT!Thury_Hydrodynamics_Compendium. ## Wikipedia : Wikitube **Strict pair:** [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicity_(fluid_mechanics)) : [Wikitube](https://en.wikitube.io/wiki/Helicity_(fluid_mechanics)) ## Previous hub tags Hubs: `Life_Physics`, `Systems`.
