## Story
Holmium was discovered in 1878 by Swedish chemist Per Teodor Cleve, who isolated it from rare-earth ores [model-prior - verify]. Its name derives from Holmia, the Neo-Latin name for Stockholm, signaling the Scandinavian origin of the element's discovery. Holmium is the fourth and final rare earth from the famous Ytterby quarry, completing the quartet that shaped 19th-century lanthanide chemistry.
The element is a silvery lanthanide with the highest magnetic moment of any natural element [model-prior - verify], making it central to ultra-high-strength permanent magnet research. Holmium is widely used in alloys with erbium to create yttrium-holmium-iron-garnet (YโHoโ
Feโ
Oโโ) and similar materials for microwave and laser applications [model-prior - verify]. It also functions as a neutron absorber in some reactor control systems and is used in certain laser-active mediums for surgery and materials processing.
The element's exceptional magnetic properties underscore why the Ytterby cluster was so valuable: these four rare earths collectively opened access to an enormous range of magnetic, optical, and nuclear properties, enabling technologies from electromagnets to lasers to reactor control that would be impossible to achieve with common elements alone.
