# Isotope Isotopes are atoms of the same element carrying different numbers of neutrons — identical proton counts, different masses. Chemically they are near-twins, because chemistry is decided by the Electron_shell; physically they can behave entirely differently, because mass and nuclear structure are not. ## Why this spine cares The whole noble branch turns on one isotope pair. Helium is overwhelmingly helium-4, a tightly bound bosonic nucleus; Helium-3 is one Neutron lighter and a Fermion, and that single difference changes its superfluid transition temperature by three orders of magnitude. On the reactive branch, Deuterium and Tritium are hydrogen isotopes whose only real distinction from ordinary Hydrogen is nuclear — and that distinction is the entire case for Nuclear_fusion. Natural_abundance decides which of them are cheap and which are strategic. **Reads with:** *Atomic Physics for Everyone (2025)* — [OTL record](https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/textbooks/atomic-physics-for-everyone-an-introduction-to-atomic-physics-quantum-mechanics-and-precision-spectroscopy-with-no-college-level-prerequisites) · [download](https://scholarworks.smith.edu/textbooks/9/).
