## Story
Livermorium was first synthesized in 2000 at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, through the bombardment of curium-248 with calcium-48 ions. The element is named for the laboratory itself—Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, home to both the cyclotron work and the nuclear stockpile research program. Lv-293 has a half-life of approximately 0.061 seconds [model-prior - verify], one of the shortest-lived superheavy elements, accessible only through rapid nuclear decay detection.
Livermorium occupies group 16 (the chalcogens), where it would nominally be expected to resemble oxygen, sulfur, selenium, and tellurium—yet this expectation is shattered at the superheavy frontier [model-prior - verify]. Relativistic effects may cause it to display noble-gas-like properties or form unexpected bonds [model-prior - verify]. Its chemistry, if observable, would be unprecedented and wholly driven by relativistic quantum mechanics.
The naming returns honor to the American laboratory that played a crucial role in the superheavy element frontier, particularly in nuclear stockpile stewardship science. Livermorium represents the American contribution to the international synthesis efforts that created the final elements of period 7.
