# Edward Everett Smith
*Minnesota legislator and 18th lieutenant governor of Minnesota (1861–1931)*
Edward Everett Smith (May 5, 1861 – July 29, 1931) sat in both chambers of the Minnesota Legislature. He became the state's 18th [[Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota]], holding that office from September 25, 1909, to January 3, 1911.[^1] A native of Spring Valley, Minnesota, he died in [[Minneapolis]] in 1931.[^1]
He reached the lieutenant governorship by succession. He was president pro tempore of the [[Minnesota Senate]] when [[Adolph Olson Eberhart]] became [[Governor of Minnesota]], and he took the office Eberhart vacated.[^1]
## Career
### Legislature
Smith began his legislative service in the [[Minnesota House of Representatives]], where he sat from January 7, 1895, to January 1, 1899.[^1] On January 2, 1899, he moved to the Minnesota Senate, and he held that seat through June 25, 1910.[^1]
### Lieutenant governorship
Smith was serving as the Senate's president pro tempore when Eberhart moved up to the governorship. Smith then filled the lieutenant governorship from September 25, 1909, until January 3, 1911.[^1] He did not give up his Senate seat on becoming lieutenant governor. He remained a senator until that term expired, so for part of his lieutenant governorship he held both positions.[^1]
