# Elmore
*A city in Faribault County, Minnesota, on the Iowa border; the boyhood home of Walter Mondale.*
Elmore is a small city in Faribault County, in southern [[Minnesota]], lying against the Iowa state line.[^1][^2] The 2020 census counted 549 residents there.[^1] Former U.S. Vice President [[Walter Mondale]], a Democratic presidential candidate, grew up in the city.[^1]
The project's at-issue record carries one item on Elmore. That item places Mondale's Minnesota ground in Elmore rather than in [[Waverly]], and it records that no source located connects Mondale to Waverly.[^5]
## Who
The city takes its name from Andrew E. Elmore, one of its early settlers.[^3] Walter F. Mondale, who later served as Vice President and ran for president as a Democrat, spent his boyhood in Elmore.[^1]
## Where
Elmore lies in Faribault County.[^1] Figures from the [[United States Census Bureau]] give the city a total area of 0.92 square miles (2.38 km²), with no water area.[^2] Its southern side borders Iowa, and U.S. Highway 169 is one of the main roads through town.[^2]
## When
An Elmore post office has operated continuously since 1863.[^3]
## How many
Each decennial count since 2000 has recorded a smaller population than the one before. The 2000 census found 735 residents in 305 households, 185 of them families, at a density of 815.9 people per square mile, with 338 housing units.[^4] By the 2010 census the count was 663 people in 266 households, 158 of them families, at 720.7 people per square mile, with 320 housing units.[^4] That year the average household held 2.23 people and the median age was 38.6 years.[^4] The 2020 census recorded 549 residents.[^1]
## In the at-issue record
- **Item AI-Humphrey-074 (Humphrey package).** The item states that Mondale's Minnesota ground is Elmore, in Faribault County. It states that no source located connects Mondale to Waverly, and it describes Waverly as exclusively a Humphrey site. It also says the corpus keeps the two men distinct and does not merge them into a single lineage. The item gives its reason as follows: "precision about who is where is the baseline of an accountability record."[^5]
- The item lists one supporting source, a news report from mprnews.org, and draws on §V of the project's *HHH Waverly Apex Dossier*. The pack contains no web address for either source. The item is anchored to a White House fact sheet, but the pack does not reproduce that fact sheet's text, so the record does not show that the fact sheet itself addresses Mondale or Elmore.[^5]
