# Isanti County, Minnesota
*County in east-central Minnesota; county seat Cambridge.*
Isanti County lies in east-central [[Minnesota]], with Cambridge as its seat of government. The 2020 census counted 41,135 residents.[^1] The county forms part of the [[Minneapolis]]–St. Paul–Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area.[^2]
Organized on February 13, 1857, the county takes its name from a [[Dakota]] word for "knife". It was dry under county option until May 1965.[^2] In presidential and gubernatorial contests the county has returned larger Republican-candidate and independent-candidate shares than the statewide totals. No Democrat has carried it with more than 50% since 1992.[^7]
## History
The county came into being on February 13, 1857. Its name traces to the Izaty, an old name for the Santee, who belonged to the Dakota alliance; "Isanti" comes from the Dakota word for "knife" and refers to the Santee tribe.[^2]
A law signed in March 1915 let Minnesota counties decide whether to permit alcohol production. By then every city in the county had already voted for prohibition. The county stayed dry, with sales of beverages above 3.2% alcohol barred, until county option ended in May 1965.[^2]
## Geography

Donald Trump received almost 65% of the county vote in 2016, when he narrowly lost Minnesota to Hillary Clinton. His share rose to just over 68% in 2020 and to nearly 70% in 2024.[^9]
Independent candidates have also run strongly here. [[Jesse Ventura]] carried the county with more than 50% in 1998, his best result in any Minnesota county. Ross Perot took 29% in the county, finishing a close third, against 24% statewide.[^10]
