# John Hoffman (Minnesota politician)
*American politician and member of the Minnesota Senate; survivor of the June 14, 2025 shooting that killed Melissa Hortman*
John A. Hoffman (born January 17, 1965) is a [[Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party]] (DFL) politician who sits in the [[Minnesota Senate]].[^1] He was first elected in 2012. Since the 2022 redistricting he has represented District 34, which covers portions of Anoka and Hennepin counties in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.[^1]
On June 14, 2025, Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot at their home and hospitalized. In the same spree, Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed.[^1] KARE 11 reported a Hoffman family statement in June 2025.[^2]
## Early life and career
Hoffman's birthplace was Casper, Wyoming, and his birth date was January 17, 1965.[^1] Before he entered the [[Minnesota Legislature]], he held a seat on the Anoka-Hennepin School District Board, which he joined in 2005.[^1] Earlier, he sat on the Federal Interagency Coordinating Council. That body advised Cabinet members on services for children up to age eight, with emphasis on those with special health-care needs.[^1]
## Minnesota Senate
In 2012 Hoffman won the Senate seat for the 36th district, unseating incumbent Benjamin Kruse.[^1] Voters returned him in 2016, 2020 and 2022.[^1] The 2022 race followed redistricting, and he has since represented the 34th district.[^1] He was minority whip from 2017 to 2020. As of the cached Wikipedia revision (retrieved October 26, 2026), he chairs the Human Services Committee.[^1]
## Assassination attempt
The cached Wikipedia account states that on June 14, 2025, Vance Boelter, then 57, shot Hoffman nine times and Yvette Hoffman eight times at their home.[^1] Both were taken to the hospital, and both had emergency surgery. Yvette Hoffman's condition was at first reported as unclear.[^1] According to the same account, Boelter then went to the home of Melissa Hortman and her husband and killed them.[^1]
Boelter was arrested on June 15, 2025.[^1] On June 16, Joseph H. Thompson, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota, led a press conference announcing the arrest and the charges.[^1] The record here does not include the charging documents or any disposition of the case.[^1]
On June 19, 2025, the couple issued a joint statement. It recounted the attack and mourned the Hortmans.[^1] Yvette Hoffman left the hospital that day.[^1] KARE 11 reported a Hoffman family statement in June 2025.[^2]
Hoffman spent three weeks in intensive care. In July 2025 he was discharged to a rehabilitation facility to continue his recovery.[^1] His first public appearance after the shooting came on August 25, 2025, when he addressed the Democratic National Committee's summer meeting in [[Minneapolis]].[^1]
