# Jon Koznick
*Republican member of the Minnesota House of Representatives for District 57A*
Jon Koznick (born July 4, 1972) is a Republican member of the [[Minnesota House of Representatives]], where he has held the District 57A seat since 2015.[^1] The district lies in the southern Twin Cities metropolitan area and takes in [[Lakeville]] along with portions of Dakota and Scott Counties.[^1] He belongs to the [[Republican Party of Minnesota]].[^1]
Koznick was first elected in 2014 and has won every biennial election since.[^1] In 2024 he was among the signatories of a minority report on the [[Metropolitan Council (Minnesota)]]. The report proposed a [[Modified Council of Governments]] made up of seven county commissioners and 33 municipal and township officials allocated proportionally, to take effect January 1, 2027.[^2]
The primary record cited in this article establishes Koznick's signature on that report.[^2] The record does not establish the account of his committee work and transportation positions below against legislative journals or bill records; that account rests on the Wikipedia summary.[^1]
## Early life, education, and career
Koznick's birthplace is Colombia. Following his mother's death, he was placed in an orphanage at age five; he was adopted soon afterward and came to the United States.[^1] He earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing from [[St. Cloud State University]] and settled in Lakeville in 2001.[^1]
## Minnesota House of Representatives
Koznick entered the 2014 race after the eight-term Republican incumbent, Mary Liz Holberg, said she would not run again.[^1] Ahead of the 2016 Republican presidential primary, he was one of two dozen state legislators who endorsed Marco Rubio. In the 2018 Republican primary for governor, he backed [[Tim Pawlenty]].[^1]
According to the Wikipedia summary retrieved in October 2026, he is the minority lead on the Economic Development Finance and Policy Committee. He is also a member of the State and Local Government Finance and Policy Committee and the Taxes Committee. He was an assistant minority leader in the House Republican Caucus in 2019–2020.[^1]
### Transportation
Koznick has opposed proposals to increase Minnesota's gas tax.[^1] He sponsored a bill to dissolve the [[Counties Transit Improvement Board]], a public body that pooled resources to fund transit lines. Governor [[Mark Dayton]] opposed the proposal.[^1] Citing low ridership, Koznick authored legislation to shut down the [[Northstar commuter rail line]] between [[Big Lake]] and [[Minneapolis]].[^1] He also opposed predevelopment funding for a proposed land bridge over Interstate 94 in Saint Paul.[^1]
### Metropolitan Council
Koznick signed a letter that sought reforms to the Metropolitan Council, the region's planning agency. The letter also faulted the council's management of the [[Southwest Light Rail]] project.[^1] As a member of a committee on the council's Structure and Service, he called for the council to be more accountable.[^1] He chaired the Legislative Commission on Metropolitan Government for a short period. He resigned after a procedural dispute between the commission's DFL and Republican members.[^1]
In 2024 Koznick, listed as Rep. Jon Koznick (Lakeville), signed the *Metropolitan Council Council-of-Governments Minority Report*.[^2] The report proposed a modified Council of Governments of seven county commissioners plus 33 proportionally allocated municipal and township officials, effective January 1, 2027.[^2] A membership list is published alongside the report on the same site.[^3]
