# Larry Stauber *Former judge of the Minnesota Court of Appeals (2008–2017)* Lawrence "Larry" B. Stauber Jr. (born 1947) is a former judge of the [[Minnesota Court of Appeals]]. Governor [[Tim Pawlenty]] named him to the court on June 24, 2008. Voters returned him to the seat in 2010 and 2016, and he left the bench at the end of May 2017.[^1] Before his appointment, Stauber practiced law in Duluth from 1977 until 2008, and from 1978 to 2006 he also did part-time public defense work. After he reached the state's mandatory judicial retirement age of 70, he continued as a Senior Judge of the court and took an adjunct teaching post at the [[Mitchell Hamline School of Law]].[^1] ## Biography Stauber earned both a B.A. and a B.S. at the [[University of Minnesota]], Duluth, in 1970. He then completed a law degree (J.D.) at the Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1977.[^1] He was in the U.S. Army between 1971 and 1974. He was married until 2015, when his wife died, and he has two adult children.[^1] ## Legal career From 1977 to 1982 Stauber ran a solo law practice in Duluth. Between 1978 and 2006 he also took on part-time work as a public defender.[^1] In 1982 he became a partner and senior attorney at Stauber and Lien, a general practice firm. He remained there until he joined the Court of Appeals. His other roles included district court referee, condemnation commissioner for the [[Minnesota Department of Transportation]], and Guardian ad Litem.[^1] ## Judicial career When he announced the 2008 appointment, Pawlenty pointed to Stauber's years as a practicing attorney. He also said he wanted judges drawn from varied legal backgrounds, adding: "in Larry's case, he's got three decades of legal experience, including appellate experience which will serve him well."[^1] In the 2010 election Stauber beat Dan Griffith, a Republican challenger, and no one ran against him in 2016. He stayed on the court until he turned 70, the age at which Minnesota requires judges to retire.[^1] After his retirement, Stauber served as a Senior Judge of the Minnesota Court of Appeals and held an Adjunct/Affiliated Professor appointment at Mitchell Hamline. In that senior role he kept hearing cases. Among them was a case over the [[Minneapolis]] Park and Recreation Board's renaming of Lake Calhoun as Bde Maka Ska.[^1] ## In the Minnesota record ### Who - Lawrence "Larry" B.
