# Spencer Igo
*American politician serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives since 2021*
Spencer R. Igo (born March 26, 1996) has been a member of the [[Minnesota House of Representatives]] since 2021, elected as a member of the [[Republican Party of Minnesota]].[^1] His seat, District 7A in northern [[Minnesota]], takes in the city of Hibbing and portions of Aitkin, Itasca and St. Louis Counties.[^1]
Before his election, Igo held campaign and congressional staff posts. From 2019 to 2021 he was a field representative for U.S. Representative [[Pete Stauber]].[^2] He won the House seat in 2020 after the Republican incumbent did not run again. In 2022 he defeated a DFL incumbent whom redistricting had placed in the same area.[^3]
In the House he has supported northern Minnesota's mining and timber industries and has criticized the state's environmental review process.[^4] In 2026 he was the House author of [[2026 Minnesota Amendment 1]], which the House passed unanimously.[^5]
## Early life, education and career
Igo was raised in [[Grand Rapids, Minnesota]], and finished high school at [[Grand Rapids High School]].[^2] He later completed a Bachelor of Science in public administration at the University of North Dakota.[^2]
In 2018 he was a field director on the congressional campaign of [[Jason Lewis (Minnesota politician)]] for the [[United States House of Representatives]].[^2] From 2019 to 2021 he served Congressman Stauber as northern field representative in [[Minnesota's 8th congressional district]].[^2]
## Minnesota House of Representatives
Igo first sought the seat when [[Sandy Layman]], a Republican who had served two terms, announced she would not run again. He won in 2020 and was returned in 2022.[^3] The 2022 legislative redistricting put him in the same area as DFL Representative [[Julie Sandstede]], and he defeated her in that year's general election.[^3]
Igo holds a post as an assistant minority leader in the House Republican caucus. His committee assignments are Climate and Energy, Economic Development, and Sustainable Infrastructure.[^4]
Igo has backed the mining and timber sectors of northern Minnesota and has criticized the state's environmental review process.[^4] He has contended that mining bans would shift jobs overseas to places with lower environmental and labor standards. He has called himself "pro-labor, against right-to-work."[^4] Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he sent a letter urging President Joe Biden to expand oil production and mining so as to reduce dependence on foreign imports.[^4]
In 2021 he proposed legislation to establish a wolf hunting season.[^5] He opposed proposals to prohibit lead fishing tackle, pointing to concerns about implementation and the high cost of alternatives.[^5] In 2026 he was the House author of 2026 Minnesota Amendment 1, and the House passed it without a dissenting vote.[^5]
## Personal life
Igo resides in Wabana Township, Minnesota. He belongs to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Rapids.[^6]
