# Wright County, Minnesota *County in east central Minnesota, United States* Wright County lies in the east central part of Minnesota, with its seat of government at Buffalo.[^1] The 2020 census counted 141,337 residents, and the population was estimated at 157,557 in 2025. By population it is the state's tenth-largest county, and the cited source describes it as Minnesota's fastest-growing county.[^1] The county is within the Minneapolis–St. Paul–Bloomington, MN–WI Metropolitan Statistical Area.[^1] The county was created in 1855 and takes its name from the New York politician Silas Wright. Its seat was at Monticello until 1868, when the seat moved to Buffalo.[^2] ## History Wright County dates from 1855, and its name honors Silas Wright, a politician from New York.[^2] Monticello was the first county seat, and Buffalo replaced it in 1868.[^2] Most of the area's earliest settlers came from German and Swedish backgrounds. The population rose from 3,729 in 1860 to 13,775 in 1875.[^3] Franklyn Curtiss-Wedge's *History of Wright County, Minnesota* (1915) is an early account of the county. Chapter titles in its first volume include *Frenchmen Winter on Wright County Islands in 1805-06*, *Edmund Brissett Establishes Trading Post in Wright County*, and *Otsego and Monticello Settled*.[^4] Another chapter, *Coming of the Railroads*, names the St. Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba and the Great Northern.[^5] The record holds only the volume's front matter and table of contents. It does not establish what those chapters say.[^4] Wikipedia's National Register of Historic Places listings in Wright County, Minnesota counts 20 current listings in the county, with data current through December 19, 2025. Listings it names include the Gust Akerlund Photographic Studio, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Clearwater Masonic Lodge No. 28 / G.A.R. It also records that he died at his Waverly home on January 13, 1978.[^7] The 1998 thriller *A Simple Plan* takes place in Wright County without naming any particular town in it.[^8] ## Geography The United States Census Bureau gives the county's total area as 714 square miles (1,850 km²). The Mississippi River forms the county's northeastern boundary.[^9] Wright is among 17 Minnesota counties in the savanna region whose soils are more savanna than either prairie or forest. Wright and adjacent Hennepin County are the only two Minnesota counties where savanna soils cover more than 75% of the area.[^10] ### Major highways Interstate 94 and U.S. Highway 12 cross the county.
