# Magnus effect A spinning ball curves. The Magnus effect is the sideways Force on a rotating body moving through a fluid, and it is the Kutta–Joukowski_theorem with the circulation supplied by rotation rather than by aerofoil shape. Spin drags a boundary layer around with the surface, so the flow is sped up on one side and slowed on the other; pressure falls where speed rises, and the ball is pushed toward the fast side. ## Same equation, no wing Because lift is proportional to circulation and nothing in the Kutta–Joukowski_theorem cares how the circulation arose, a smooth spinning cylinder generates lift as legitimately as a cambered section does. This is the cleanest available proof that lift is a circulatory phenomenon rather than a matter of shape or path length — a point worth making because the schoolbook explanation cannot account for it at all. The mechanism depends on the Boundary_layer and therefore on Viscosity; in a true Potential_flow the spin would do nothing. ## Where it shows up Swing bowling, a topspin forehand, a curveball, and a golf ball's backspin-driven lift are all Magnus. So are Flettner rotors — vertical spinning cylinders fitted to ships to convert wind into thrust, revived recently for fuel saving on the transportation bridge. The effect reverses at certain Reynolds_number ranges when the Boundary_layer trips asymmetrically, which is why knuckleballs and rough-surface balls behave strangely and why drag crises matter in sport. **Microsim brief (next pass):** Ball in a cross-flow with a spin slider that can go negative; streamlines bunch on one side and the lift arrow flips with the spin.
