## Story
Manganese has been known since antiquity in the form of manganese dioxide (pyrolusite), a black mineral that ancient glass makers used to remove the green tint from their glass. The element was isolated as a pure metal in 1774 by Swedish chemist Johann Gahn by heating pyrolusite with charcoal. The name derives from the Latin "magnesia nigra" (black magnesia), which was distinguished from "magnesia alba" (white magnesia, which became magnesium). For nearly two centuries, manganese remained primarily a laboratory curiosity until the steel industry discovered its critical role in alloy strength in the late 1800s [model-prior - verify].
Manganese is a hard, brittle, silver-gray transition metal that does not occur in pure form in nature. It oxidizes readily in air and reacts strongly with water [model-prior - verify]. The primary ore is pyrolusite (manganese dioxide), and significant amounts also occur in manganese nodules on the ocean floor [model-prior - verify]. Approximately 85 percent of manganese production is used in steel manufacturing, where it dramatically increases strength and hardness [model-prior - verify]. Manganese is also used in batteries, catalysts, and fertilizers.
In the corpus, manganese carries profound symbolic weight. Mendeleev organized the periodic table around groups of elements, and the manganese group (group 7) was central to his prediction scheme. The element gap below manganese—where element 43 should fall—became Technetium, the first artificially created element and the patron of Technitium School. Manganese thus stands at the threshold between the predictable and the synthetic, between discovery and creation.
