## Story
Neodymium was discovered in 1885 by Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach as the complementary element to praseodymium, separated from what was called didymium. Its name comes from Greek neos (new) and didymos (twin), acknowledging its discovery as a separate element from its companion praseodymium. Neodymium is relatively abundant among rare earths (41.5 mg/kg).
Neodymium is a soft, silvery-white metal that readily oxidizes. Its most transformative application is in neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets, which are the strongest permanent magnets known—with roughly twice the magnetic strength of older ferrite magnets. [model-prior - verify] Nd-Fe-B magnets are essential in electric motors for vehicles, generators in wind turbines, and in compact motors for consumer electronics and industrial applications. [model-prior - verify] The global demand for neodymium is driven by electrification (electric vehicles) and renewable energy (wind turbines), making it a critical element in the energy transition.
The corpus directly engages neodymium as the central element in the rare-earth magnet economy—the material without which large-scale wind power and electrified transport would not be feasible.
