## Story
Neon was discovered in 1898 by Scottish chemist William Ramsay and Morris Travers through the fractional distillation of liquid air. The element's name, from Greek *neon* ("new"), reflects its status as a newly discovered element when isolation techniques advanced enough to liquefy air. Ramsay would go on to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1904, partly for discovering neon and the other noble gases and demonstrating their inertness to chemical reaction.
Neon is an inert noble gas with a complete outer electron shell, making it chemically unreactive under virtually all normal conditions [model-prior - verify]. Its most famous application is in neon tubes for lighting: when a high-voltage current passes through neon gas at low pressure, it emits a brilliant orange-red glow that became iconic in 20th-century advertising and art. Neon exists in trace amounts in Earth's atmosphere (about 18 parts per million) but is much more abundant in the Sun and stars, where it is produced by nuclear fusion in massive stars [model-prior - verify]. Neon-20 comprises most natural neon, while neon-22 is used in particle detectors and high-precision spectrometry.
In this corpus, neon represents the **noble gases and inert chemistry**โthe zero-reactivity boundary of the periodic table. Its role in lighting and human aesthetics, contrasted with its cosmic abundance, illustrates the gap between terrestrial scarcity and universal commonness that appears throughout materials science.

> Neon is a chemical element; it has the symbol Ne and atomic number 10. It is the second noble gas in the periodic table.[13] Neon is a colorless, odorless, inert monatomic gas under standard conditions, with approximately two-thirds the density of air.
