## Story
Nickel was not isolated as an element until 1751 by Swedish chemist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt, who extracted it from a mineral called niccolite (nickel arsenide). The element is named after "Nickel," a mischievous sprite from German mining folklore. Before its identification, miners had encountered nickel ores but could not extract useful metal from them, and the spiteful spirit name reflected their frustration. For nearly two centuries, nickel remained a laboratory rarity; industrial demand emerged in the late 1800s when nickel steel alloys proved superior for military armor plating and other demanding applications [model-prior - verify].
Nickel is a hard, silvery-white transition metal that is naturally ferromagnetic (permanently magnetic without an external field) [model-prior - verify]. The primary ores are laterite (weathered ultramafic rock containing nickel silicates) and sulfide deposits. Nickel's principal use is in alloy production, particularly stainless steel (roughly 60-65 percent of global nickel consumption), where it provides corrosion resistance and ductility [model-prior - verify]. Modern battery technology, especially lithium-ion cells, has significantly increased nickel demand in recent decades [model-prior - verify].
In the corpus, nickel occupies a unique position alongside cobalt as a defining element of Minnesota's geological and economic future. The Duluth Complex—a massive layered intrusion in northeastern Minnesota—contains world-class reserves of both copper and nickel. The Pulsar Helium Topaz well, drilled to explore this Cu-Ni deposit, accidentally struck a helium-rich pocket that revealed Minnesota as a helium-3 source. Nickel thus connects terrestrial mining heritage, critical materials science, and extraterrestrial resource expansion.
