## Story
Nihonium was first synthesized in 2004 at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science in Japan, through the bombardment of bismuth-209 with zinc-70 ions. The element is named Nihonium for Japan (Nihon in Japanese)โthe first element named for an Asian nation, marking Japan's arrival as a leader in superheavy element synthesis. Nh-286 has a half-life of approximately 10 seconds [model-prior - verify], existing long enough to detect but not long enough for chemistry.
Nihonium is the first of the p-block superheavy elements, beginning group 13, though it would only nominally be expected to resemble gallium, indium, or thallium in behavior [model-prior - verify]. At this atomic number, relativistic effects completely dominate, and the periodic table's classical patterns shatter into quantum mechanical effects that have no macroscopic analog [model-prior - verify]. Nihonium exists only as nuclear decay products.
The naming marks the globalization of element synthesis. After the Soviet and Western programs, after German dominance of the GSI facility, Japan's Riken laboratory demonstrated that the superheavy frontier was no longer monopolized by any single nation. Nihonium is named for the place that brought the island of stability within reach.
