> Phosphorus is a chemical element; it has symbol P and atomic number 15. Elemental phosphorus exists in two major forms, white phosphorus and red phosphorus, but because it is highly reactive, phosphorus is never found as a free element on Earth. ## Story
Phosphorus was discovered in 1669 by German alchemist Hennig Brandt, making it the first element to be isolated by a European scientist. Brandt obtained it through the distillation of urine residues, an unglamorous origin that nonetheless led to his phosphorus glowing in the dark, which he named *phosphorus* from the Greek "light-bearer." For centuries, phosphorus remained a curiosity until its critical importance in agriculture and biology was recognized in the 19th century.
Phosphorus exists in several allotropic forms, most notably white phosphorus (which ignites spontaneously in air above 34ยฐC and glows greenish-yellow in the dark) and red phosphorus (a chemically stable polymer used in matches and safety compositions) [model-prior - verify]. The element is essential to all life, forming the backbone of DNA and RNA (the sugar-phosphate skeleton) and serving as the energy currency of cells in ATP (adenosine triphosphate) [model-prior - verify]. Phosphorus ranks as one of the "big three" macronutrients in fertilizer, alongside nitrogen and potassium (NPK fertilizers). Modern agriculture depends utterly on phosphate mining and phosphorus compounds: without synthetic phosphate fertilizers, the current global population would be unsustainable [model-prior - verify]. Phosphorus is also used in detergents, flame retardants, and the semiconductor industry.
In this corpus, phosphorus anchors the **agricultural productivity and life chemistry narrative**โit is the nutrient element that enables food security and connects geochemistry to biology and human civilization.
