# Properties of water Water is the product of the reaction canon and the strangest common substance on the spine. Almost all of its oddities trace to one cause: the Hydrogen_bond, which links molecules into a shifting network and gives water properties no molecule of its size should have. ## The anomalies that matter It is densest at 4 °C rather than at freezing, so ice floats and lakes overturn instead of freezing solid from the bottom — the seasonal turnover that governs Lake_Superior and every northern water body. Its heat capacity and latent heats are enormous, making it the working fluid of choice for Heat_transfer and the climate's thermal ballast. Its Surface_tension is high enough to run capillary transport through soil and tissue, and its Viscosity sets the Reynolds_number of nearly every flow on this spine. It dissolves more substances than any other common liquid, which is why Cavitation, Corrosion, and biology all happen in it. **Reads with:** *General Chemistry: Principles, Patterns, and Applications (2011)* — [OTL record](https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/textbooks/general-chemistry-principles-patterns-and-applications) · [download](https://www.saylor.org/site/textbooks/General%20Chemistry%20Principles,%20Patterns,%20and%20Applications.pdf).
