An antenna radiates a pulse or modulated waveform; the round-trip delay of the returned echo gives range, the antenna's pointing gives direction, and the Doppler shift of the echo gives radial velocity. The receivable power falls off as the fourth power of range, so radar depends on high-gain antennas, matched-filter pulse compression, and coherent signal processing to pull weak returns out of noise and clutter.
