# Redox Redox is the paired transfer of electrons: one species is oxidised, losing them, while another is reduced, gaining them. Neither happens alone. The name comes from [[Oxygen]]'s historical role as the usual electron acceptor, but the definition long ago outgrew the element — what matters is the electron, not the oxidiser. ## The reaction canon is a redox canon [[Combustion]] is redox run fast and hot; a [[Fuel_cell]] is the same reaction run slowly with the electrons routed through a wire, which is why it delivers [[Voltage]] instead of only heat. [[Electrolysis]] is redox forced backwards by supplying that [[Electric_current|current]], and [[Corrosion]] is redox happening where nobody wanted it — a [[Reliability_engineering|maintenance]] cost on every bridge of this spine. Respiration in [[Biology|living things]] is the same chemistry moderated by enzymes, which is why [[Hemoglobin]] carrying [[Oxygen]] belongs on the same page as a burner.
