## Story
Scandium was discovered in 1879 by Lars Fredrik Nilson in the mineral euxenite in Sweden, confirming a gap that Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev had predicted in 1869. Mendeleev called it "eka-boron" and predicted its atomic weight to within one percent—a triumph of periodic table theory that legitimized the table's structure and predictive power. The element remained largely a laboratory curiosity for over a century, present in small quantities in many minerals but rarely isolated in pure form.
Scandium is a transition metal that sits in group 3 of the periodic table. It is highly reactive, particularly with oxygen and water, and occurs naturally only in compounds rather than as a free metal [model-prior - verify]. The element's scarcity and expensive extraction have confined most applications to aerospace, where its alloys with aluminum are valued for strength and light weight [model-prior - verify]. Scandium is also used in solid-state lasers and in specialized high-intensity discharge lamps [model-prior - verify].
In the Elements Canon, scandium serves as a bridge element between the d-block's group 3 and the rarer transition metals. It represents the structural principle that Mendeleev's periodic law could predict undiscovered elements—the same logic that undergirds the REACTION CHEMISTRY LIBRARY and the canon's broader claim that the periodic table is a map of discovery, not just a catalog.
