# Spectral line A spectral line is a sharp feature in a spectrum — light emitted or absorbed at one precise wavelength when an electron moves between two [[Electron_shell|shell]] energies. Because those energies are fixed by the atom's structure, the pattern of lines is a fingerprint no two elements share. ## Reading matter at a distance [[Helium]] was found in the [[Sun]]'s spectrum before anyone isolated it on [[Earth]] — an element discovered by looking. The same method identifies composition in the [[Interstellar_medium]], measures how fast a source is receding, and, closer to hand, drives the [[Emission_spectrum|emission]] tests and [[Helium_mass_spectrometer|leak detection]] used on the [[WT!Advanced_Manufacturing_Center_of_Excellence|manufacturing]] bridge. The [[Hydrogen_line]] at 21 cm maps neutral hydrogen across the galaxy.
