## Story
Strontium was isolated in 1808 by English chemist Humphry Davy through the electrolysis of molten strontium chloride. The element is named after Strontian, a village in the Scottish Highlands where the mineral strontianite (strontium carbonate) was discovered in 1790. Before Davy's isolation, strontium was known only as an ore and compounds; the pure metal was difficult to produce and remained expensive for much of the 19th century. In the 20th century, strontium gained widespread notoriety due to strontium-90, a radioactive isotope produced in nuclear fission that concentrates in milk and bone, raising health concerns following nuclear weapon testing and the Chernobyl accident [model-prior - verify].
Strontium is an alkaline earth metal (group 2) with chemical properties intermediate between the more reactive alkali metals and the less reactive transition metals. It does not occur in pure form in nature; the primary ores are strontianite (strontium carbonate) and celestite (strontium sulfate) [model-prior - verify]. The element's industrial uses are quite limited compared to other metals, but strontium compounds are important in specialized applications: pyrotechnic flares produce deep red light when strontium salts burn, strontium ranelate is used in osteoporosis treatment, and strontium ferrite is used in permanent magnets [model-prior - verify].
In the corpus, strontium exemplifies how elements can move from industrial utility into the realm of radiological concern. Strontium-90 remains a key environmental marker of past nuclear weapons testing, connecting the periodic table to 20th-century geopolitical history.
