# Minnesota's Sixth Congressional District
*A U.S. House district covering most or all of Anoka, Benton, Carver, Sherburne, Stearns and Wright counties, Minnesota.*
Minnesota's Sixth Congressional District is a district of the [[United States House of Representatives]] in [[Minnesota]]. Its boundaries were redrawn after the 2020 census and have applied from the 118th Congress onward. Within them it takes in most or all of six counties: Anoka, Benton, Carver, Sherburne, Stearns and Wright.[^1]
The district's population is concentrated in two areas. The first is the outer ring of northern and western Twin Cities suburbs, where Blaine is the district's largest city. The second is the [[St. Cloud]] area, whose central city ranks second in size.[^1] The cached Wikipedia revision, retrieved 27 October 2026, gives the incumbent as [[Tom Emmer]], a Republican and the House majority whip.[^1]
## Where
The suburban portion of the district includes Blaine, Andover, [[Chaska]], Ramsey, St. Michael-Albertville, [[Elk River]], Chanhassen, Otsego, Lino Lakes, [[Buffalo]], Ham Lake, [[Monticello]], [[Waconia]], [[Big Lake]], East Bethel and Victoria.[^1] In the St. Cloud area, the district takes in St. Cloud, Sartell, Sauk Rapids and [[Waite Park]].[^1]
The current map, used for the 118th and later Congresses, places every township and municipality of Benton, Carver, Sherburne and Wright counties in the district.[^1] It also includes 15 units in Anoka County. Of these, Ramsey is split with the 3rd District, and St. Francis is split with the 8th District and shared with Isanti County.[^1] In Stearns County the district includes 12 units, among them St. Cloud, Sartell, St. Joseph, Rockville, St. Augusta and Waite Park; St. Wendell Township is split with the 7th District.[^1] Two Hennepin County cities, Hanover and Rockford, are in the district; both are shared with Wright County.[^1]
## How many
The composition list gives the following counts of townships and municipalities in the district: Anoka County 15, Benton County 19, Carver County 21, Hennepin County 2, Sherburne County 17, Stearns County 12 and Wright County 35. In Benton, Carver, Sherburne and Wright, those counts cover every unit in the county.[^1]
## Who
The election entries in the pack name the following members:[^1]
- Rick Nolan, 94th through 96th Congresses.
- Vin Weber, 97th Congress.
- Gerry Sikorski, recorded as DFL, 98th through 102nd Congresses.
- Rod Grams, 103rd Congress.
- Bill Luther, 104th through 107th Congresses.
The pack does not record a party for Nolan, Weber, Grams or Luther. The current member, Emmer, is recorded as a Republican.[^1]
## When
These dates come from the election entries for the district:[^1]
- **7 November 1972:** Nolan lost his first race for the seat.
- **5 November 1974:** Nolan won on his second attempt.
- **1976:** Nolan was returned to office.
- **7 November 1978:** Nolan was returned again.
- **1980:** Weber was elected.
- **2 November 1982:** Sikorski won the seat.
- **6 November 1984:** Sikorski was re-elected.
- **1986, 1988 and 1990:** Sikorski won further re-election.
In 2012 the redrawn district did not include Bachmann's residence. She was nonetheless legally eligible to seek another term there, and she was re-elected.[^1]
## In the at-issue record
At-issue pair AI-Humphrey-076 makes two statements:
- Wright County lies wholly inside the Sixth District.
- The district's sitting member is the House Majority Whip.
The cached composition and representation record supports both. All 35 Wright County townships and municipalities are listed in the district, and the incumbent is Republican majority whip Tom Emmer.[^1]
The pair also contrasts the county's association with a twentieth-century figure of the [[Democratic Party (United States)]] with the member's rank in House Republican leadership. The pack does not document that association or the rank. The pair names its sources as Emmer's House office and the Majority Whip office, but neither page is in the pack.
The pair also names a March 2025 presidential action on election integrity as its anchor.[^2] The pack carries no passage from that document that establishes the district's composition or its representation.
