## Story
Ytterbium was discovered in 1878 by Swiss chemist Jean-Charles Galissard de Marignac from rare-earth ore concentrates [model-prior - verify]. Like four of its lanthanide cousins (terbium, dysprosium, holmium, and erbium), ytterbium is named for Ytterby, the Swedish village whose quarry yielded an extraordinary concentration of rare earths. It is the last lanthanide to be discussed in its historical sequence, though not the heaviest by atomic number (lutetium comes next).
Ytterbium is a silvery lanthanide with unique electronic properties. It shows both divalent and trivalent oxidation states, a rarity among the rare earths [model-prior - verify]. Ytterbium-doped fiber lasers, particularly at the 1.064 micrometer wavelength, are used for high-power industrial cutting and materials processing, competing with erbium and neodymium in the photonics market. It is also investigated as a potential optical frequency standard for atomic clocks, where its narrow linewidth enables unprecedented timekeeping precision [model-prior - verify]. In nuclear applications, ytterbium serves in some reactor control systems.
The element embodies the Ytterby legacy: five elements from one tiny Swedish quarry, each with distinct properties and specialized uses, collectively enabling technologies from telecommunications to precision measurement—an extraordinary yield from a single geologic accident.
